Horse Accessories for a Great Ride

Riding a horse is great entertainment that requires a certain level of skill along with all the right horse accessories. It is important that both the horse and the rider are well equipped with the horse accessories and tools necessary for an experience that is both fun and safe.

Horse accessories include a wide range of products that are designed to provide the rider with a good experience as well as keeping your horse healthy, happy and looking spectacular.

Fundamental Horse Riding Accessories

The best way to show your horse that you love him is to provide him with all of the best horse accessories that he needs. Here are a few horse accessories that you should not be without:

Saddle

Horse Accessories - SaddleThe first thing that comes to mind when you think about riding horses is often the saddle. The saddle is fastened with a girth to the horse’s back and acts as a supportive structure for the rider.

The horse saddles of today are not the simple pads they were in the past. Now, you can find saddles for your horse in a variety of styles. In addition to making sure the saddle is a good fit for both horse and rider, you should also keep the equestrian in mind as well.

Saddle Pads, or Corrective Pads

Horse Accessories - Saddle PadsThe saddle pad, which is also known as a corrective pad, is the pad that will go underneath the saddle on the horse’s back. Corrective pads are used to protect your horse’s back, mitigate the saddle and absorb sweat effectively. These pads, also often called numnahs, serve the same purpose as saddle blankets, but are somewhat better.

A saddle pad is usually thicker than saddle blankets, and is made up of layers of foam, felt and other materials between a tough cover with a soft inside edge for the horse’s comfort. Proper pads will protect your horse from the chronic backache that plagues many horses.

Girth Sleeves

Horse Accessories - Girth SleevesFastening the girth may cause uneasiness and discomfort for your horse. The solution to this problem is girth sleeves. You can find a wide range of girth sleeves available for your horse, such as woollen, quilt, etc.

When you use a girth sleeve, your horse will be able to work for longer periods of time because rubbing against the horse’s skin will no longer be an issue.

These are just a few basic horse accessories that you will need for your horse. Other horse accessories are available, such as wither pads, noseband covers, fleece saddle covers and more.

  1. Hi Sue-Ellen,

So true that the horse does not always take well to having the girth tightened and will sometimes even bloat out their stomach in retaliation. Great to see that girth sleeves are there for the comfort of the horse.

    Like your writing style.

    Eileen.

    • Hi Eileen,

Oh that’s right some horses do bloat out, the girth area can be a very sensitive area and over tightening a girth can cause the horse major discomfort. Well fitting gear is an essential part of good horsemanship.

  2. There are so many horse products out there its good to have a guide as to what is what. It is especially good to invest in them well so they last and so you always have horse accessories for a good ride…as you always want your horse to be comfortable

    • Hello Tegan,

There are a mountain of horse products on the market, some are good and others are not so good and sometimes it can be so overwhelming to work out what to use when or it at all.
I like to work out what the core problem is and then work from there, if a piece of gear or equipment can help the situation then I use it. I like to keep horse accessories in the simple category, use what you need and leave what you don’t need in the tack shed or in the shop.

  3. Great information on horse accessories. It is important that the right accessories are chosen for the horse as it may cause alot of discomfort and stress towards the horse if chosen wrongly. Thanks!

  4. Love the idea of horse accessories that make the horse more comfortable. It never crossed my mind that horses would suffer with back ache, although it is really obvious. If you care about keeping your horse pain free the corrective pads and girth sleeves are essential.

  5. I love horse riding – and riding with out a saddle is so much fun. When you are riding with a saddle its important to have one that fits the horse, and fits the person who is riding the horse! Good to read about the horse accessories that are available at complete horse care.

    Cheers
    Lisa

  6. Oh that’s right! As a rider you need to think for your safety and at the same time consider the condition of your horse while riding.

    • Hi Lauren,
Safety is always a consideration for yourself, your horse and others. As a rider we need to be quick thinking to be able to stay safe and like you said consider the condition of our horse as well :)
